sorry, but I still can't buy into this..most of you guys believe Cooper was very smart, but don't feel he would know the money would be very hard to trace if he survived and spent it? then when all is clear he decides to bury some money so he can enjoy his life?

why not just get into counterfeiting and skip the hijacking?

This wasn't counterfeiting. It was only possibly "Altering Currency," which is also known as "poor man's counterfeiting." He may have been familiar with it because of his advanced age - he'd have been born in the 1910's or 20's, the back end of the practice's peak.  Older than all of the agents at Tena Bar.  I don't believe he came back to bury money years later - Cook does, saying so in that clip. I simply referenced Scoles' observation that the money appeared to have been trimmed, which I do agree with, and posted the clip to back up my quote. I think it's more likely the money was buried in November of '71.

The money was found above the 1974 Dredge layer... So that dredge operation is discounted and the money likely deposited after 1974.

But, after 1974 there were other dredge operations nearby and many other speculative scenarios.

Yes, but Palmer identified the dredge layer...this is hard to beat since artifacts were found at different levels..you are implying it got above this layer from 71, to 74?

Objection, your honor.

My understanding so far is that "Counterfeiting" generally refers to the practice of manufaturing notes while "Altering Currency" refers to the practice of changing an amount on an already existing banknote or document. It's the reason we all put that little squiggly line on our checks, to protect against someone adding value to the check. And if I'm not mistaken, depending on where you commit the crime, it's a different penalty.

Either way, this practice is usually not referred to as counterfeiting, but rather "raising notes." Not denying anything. A counterfeiting operation, as previously mentioned, would be an ongoing thing and would not likely take place on a riverside beach.

This means that the money was found not under the dredge, not above the dredge, but away from the dredge material altogether.

I emailed Tom Kaye about this...I don't want to post the reply but he doesn't agree with any of this..I suggest you contact him, or I can email him to stop into the forum...

I'm fine with that. I emailed him and asked if he wanted to read this theory before I posted it, and didn't hear back. Tom's a great guy, but I doubt he's interested in this. That'd be great if he could take a few cracks at this. I'd rather have this thing tested better before I even think of calling someone at the Secret Service.

Tom's always interested in the case and new evidence.

It just doesn't make sense to do something like this..I'm a firm believer that this case if ever solved will be simple and to the point type of explanation minus all the bells and whistles added over the years.

I think this case is similar to trying to figure out an invention that will make you millions. you rack the brain thinking, and turn on the TV and see a new product, smack your forehead saying why didn't I think of that, it's so simple... O0
