Thank you Marty.   And to expand on that, I don't think he died in the jump, without those things you mentioned, or grieving loved ones drawing attention.   Nobody falls off the face of the earth like that... If he did die in the jump, it is possible his kin were sublimely naive, enough so that it would overcome the desire of importance, being, that it was their relative who was Cooper. But I still think over time that still would have surfaced...
HOWEVER... A foreign Cooper, say, from Quebec, and the relatives could easily have been oblivious to the caper.  Having lived overseas for many years, I realized how insulated our media bubble is. Had he been foreign and perished, the lack of kin outspeak is very plausible.

I've always thought that if Cooper cratered he would have left behind a lot of pending/continuing financial obligations (rent, house payments, utility bills) that would have screamed "missing person" when he failed to pay.  The FBI was looking for that.

But what if Cooper planned to leave his home area for good after the skyjack and got all his affairs in order? What if he got ready to leave without any hanging obligations? Tell the neighbors you are relocating, sell the house, terminate the rental, shut off the utilities etc. Nobody would think missing person.

Would he have thought that far ahead?

Maybe he was in some branch of the service, or just out, and had few ties, and was off the map.

But if Tom's vita is correct he was a real known person with a real life, somewhere.

Or he went "to a place you would like" ... in Mexico! The search for Cooper could have been stopped at some border or boundary difficult to cross or investigate. Maybe he went to live in Saigon.

Nobody will know the details of DB Cooper until he is found ... and by then nobody will believe it anyway! Its the perfect crime. It doesnt exist until its observed and then it is gone - instantaneously - like Schrodinger's cat! Maybe Cooper's ultimate revenge was to do something noteworthy, vanish, and then drive people mad stumbling over each other looking for a ghost? It's almost as if the whole thing was designed to never to be solved. It's a talking point and nothing more.

It would not be that hard to disappear and not be missed.  Not everyone has lots of family, friends, and acquaintances like most of us have.  Some people are real loners, really lonely, real recluses, they have no family -- not seeing them for days, months, even years would not be so unusual.  For some, it would not be that hard to walk away from it all unnoticed.  Don't assume everyone has the gifts, activities, and family that most of us enjoy and take for granted.

Or he could have staged his disappearance to make it look totally legit.  Or a staged, planned death -- a staged drowning, a hiker who disappeared, or like the guy who flew his plane into the wilderness.... never to be found again.  Lots of possibilities...

Sure, when there's little reason to not search....but this is different, as there was a strong interest.
Though the ditching in advance I would agree to that possibility had it been done years earlier before the caper... but within months of the event is venture a resounding no, for the FBI would have ferreted it out, for they had a great profile to work with.

To steal a phrase from Jaws, I'd have to say " I think we need a bigger pump ". Weather here is looking better with sun on the way. I will be in Portland next Saturday and report back. As you know, warm weather brings on snow melt in the mountains so this will take time.

Still, though, in my lifetime, I have never seen anything like we are witnessing now re: the Columbia River.  The one year we want to do our project is the one year the River is high, and stays high, and keeps staying high...and is still high....and it's going to be July in 2 weeks.  I've never seen anything like it.  What about that Trapper and Kermit?

The photo below shows Tina Bar in 1986. dredging is in progress, note the slurry going back into the river. this is much further inland by a couple hundred feet. even after the dredge operation is complete, it takes time for the water to run off the spoils.

1974, the spoils were right on the waters edge. just imagine the mess the runoff would of caused that escaped back into the river. keep in mind tons of sand would of went right down the shoreline and back into the river as well...
