On the NamUs page for Turgeon, it lists his date of disappearance as Oct. 5, 1971. But it lists the date of the "NamUs case created" as Jan. 31, 2019.

Does anyone know how this happens? There's been other mentions here of guys who went missing on a certain date but weren't reported as missing until decades later. Anyone have any knowledge of how this happens? Is the missing person report actually not even officially filed until that day or is it a matter of not entering them into the database for many years for some reason or something else entirely?

Let me ask you this. Serious question....

Let's say a suspect popped up who was:

-- 48 years old at the time of the hijacking
-- Brown hair, brown eyes, olive skin tone and turkey neck
-- WW2 paratrooper
-- Smoked Raleigh cigarettes and drank bourbon
-- Had a job that was a perfect match for the tie particles
-- Had a clear grudge or motive
-- Has a paper trail that places him at the Portland airport on the morning of the hijacking
-- Has letters from an ex-girlfriend that are dated in Nov. of 1971 where he mentions his plans of hijacking a plane

But then after learning all of that, you learn that the guy was only 5-7.

You tossing this guy out based on that?

Pretty much...this is why I don't follow suspects. it's too easy to match someone and all that happens is a trip down the rabbit hole..you guys go ahead and track him down..that's also has been going on for almost 50 years..most of you can't even place the suspect in Portland.

IMO, suspects are jumping the gun since we really don't know if Cooper survived. it's highly possible but millions can match and prove only to matching certain parts of the crime. I know exactly what it's like to go down that road..been accused multiple times of crimes based on bullshit..cost me a lot of money to prove it..

Several years ago I was accused of a hit and run. the driver hit gave a description of a grey dodge 1500 with a tag partial of AVH.

The cop does a 25 mile radial search based on the description and I pop up..I own a dodge dakota which is smaller than a 1500. the tag was the partial of my temp tag (paper tag) 4 years previous to the accident. my truck also had writing on the tailgate with large numbers (phone number) the insurance company came and measured the bumper height. my truck couldn't reach the dent. was that enough, nope the State pressed charges against me. the cop took my DL pic and showed it to the driver and he identified me? that's what got it thrown out. the failure to use a 6 photo lineup. everything was way off but didn't stop them from wanting to fry me..cost me $3,000

Basically, they were implying I removed my current and valid license plate and put an old paper temp tag in place and decided to drive around town like that. how long do you think I would get away with that or did I anticipate getting involved in an accident that day?

I'm a member of myself..

One has to use some sort of guidelines. why even have a description if one pulls completely away. you can certainly tell the difference between someone 5' 4 and 130 lbs against someone 6' at 180 lbs. it's apples and oranges. Tina would of easily noted Cooper was shorter than herself. at what point is the description crossing the line...Cooper being black? do you realize how small of a person you describe?

the average age-adjusted height for American men 20 years old and up is 69.1 inches (175.4 centimeters). That’s about 5 feet 9 inches tall. the average height for a woman is 5' 4"...he should stick out like a sore thumb.

You can find a lot of people that can check off a lot of things surrounding the case which hardly make him Cooper..of course the description will not be spot on but doubtful it would be this far off.

Shutter is right.  I happened to be involved in a matter in the early 1970s that required information on the physical characteristics (height, weight, major bone dimensions, etc., etc..) of males.  And there was plenty of information available on those physical characteristics.  At that time, males six feet tall (I believe there was one estimate that Cooper was 6'1") were well above average and would be easily noticeable.

Tina would be wearing flat shoes on the airplane when standing next to Cooper.  So she could easily determine if he was taller than her or not.  And she has said that he was taller.  For the record, stewardesses in that time frame were generally required by company policy to wear high heels when not on the airplane.  But on the airplane it was flat shoes due to the damage that high pointed heels could do to the the carpet and floor structure.

I grew up with a friend who became a jockey back in the 80's..he is about 5' 3". he was short lol. no way around it. the average jockey is 4' 10" to 5' 6" with a weight limit of 126 lbs..pretty close to what you describe Cooper being..

Sadly, drugs ruined his career and has been a battle with him to this very day. he was the number one jockey in south Florida. was on billboards, radio and television. I was recently in touch with him and he was doing well as a manager of a large Hotel on the beach. he called me a couple weeks ago in trouble again wanting money to pay off someone. I haven't heard from him since. I have bailed him out many times over..I searched the jails online looking for him and that's when I thought of the height and weight..he had over 3,000 races with almost 400 first place..total ernings over 3 million dollars. earned $415,949 in 1983...pissed it all away...

This whole subject of height caused me to smile. A new neighbor came by about 3 years ago and he introduced himself and I told my wife what a nice fellow he was. She asked me “ What was his name ? “. I had no idea so he became known simply as the Tall Guy. About a year ago I drove over to his house to tell him about a couple of coyotes hanging around. When I told him I forgot his name so we referred to him as the Tall Guy, his wife said “ he’s not that tall as he’s only 6’1. I said to her “ Well I’m only 5’10 so he sure looks tall to me !”. My point is that even though he was only 3 inches taller than me, trust me, He was very noticeable taller. Maybe it’s just me but I wouldn’t waste much time checking out someone who was 5’4 to 5’6 !

It's a tough battle with people who have suspects. some believe they have Cooper...FJ, Blevins, Eric, G Cook etc. so many claims and yet we only have room for one. "it all makes sense, it could only be, I have held back details" etc. etc. some feel they have a license to criticize others but don't pull that on me pops up real quick when you reverse it..not everyone is like that but it get's tire-some.

I just don't think Cooper has been found anymore than finding out where he landed. not a whole lot can be agreed by all with anything.

Before being told that he was 6'1'', how tall would you have estimated that he was?

Kermit might not return for a while sometimes...

The question would be how Cooper can be similar to a jockey?

For the record, I never claimed this guy was Cooper.  Hell, I only found out about the guy this morning. I know nothing more of him than what I included in that original post. 12 hours ago I had never heard of the guy. I thought he had some interesting nuggets about him so I brought him up in the "Suspects" thread. And I made sure to note that the height wasn't quite right.

I've been following the case for around 10 years now. During that time, I've never committed myself to any suspects. There are a few that I like more than others, but nobody that I would definitively point to. There's a large pile of interesting people who check a lot of boxes. But the trail always ends there.

The fact is, there is a 99.9% chance that this case is never getting solved and we are never going to definitively learn who Cooper is. We can present interesting suspects, chew on the information and that's really about it. It's been half a century and not one suspect has ever been placed on that plane or been proven to be in possession of any of the money or anything of the sort. Any and all evidence associated with any suspect is purely circumstantial. Even for as strong of a case as Colbert made for Rackstraw, at the end of the day he didn't prove shit. And sadly, that's the reality of this case.

Not putting you in that category at all..I'm just disagreeing with the height issue as failure to believing someone that short could be mistaken for someone much taller..there is a 6 inch difference between me and my friend the jockey...it's very noticeable standing, sitting etc. everywhere we would go he disappeared in the crowd lol..especially concerts...where is Ricky....oh, there he is down there lol..

It's unlikely the case will be solved without a body or a name. parts of the crime are somewhere to be found. it's possible the evidence is still out there or in someone's attic or were discarded decades ago....this isn't the only unsolved crime nor will it be the last..

Tom Kaye has got us closer but no real changes...
