A rough timeline of Colbert's "Escape Story."

Piecing together a rough timeline of events from Colbert's escape story to see how plausible (or not) it could be:

--- Cooper jumps sometime around 8:10 and lands some 1,300 feet from the Goheen airstrip

--- After landing, gathering his chute and walking 1,300 feet, we'll say he arrives at Goheen at 8:25

--- Gets into small plane and flies to Vancouver Lake to dump the money and briefcase. I estimate the lake is around 10 miles from Goheen, which would be maybe a 5 minute flight in something like a Cessna 172. Accounting for a few minutes to make contact with his accomplices, get in the plane and take off, we'll put them over Vancouver Lake at 8:35.

--- The drop is made and they continue to Scapoose airstrip, which is roughly 8 miles. We'll say they land there around 8:40.

--- Cooper changes clothes and planes and takes off again. We'll say they take off at 8:45.

--- They fly to Portland International, which is roughly 15 miles away. We'll say they land there around 9:00.

--- Cooper then goes in and boards another flight.

1.) My estimates may certainly be off. I know there are folks here with much more knowledge of small aircraft than me that might be able to offer some better timelines. If so, please correct me.

2.) What time was the last flight out of Portland International that night? I did a quick search for historical aviation records but didn't see anything. I swear I've seen someone here reference flight records from the day of the hijacking but I might have just been hallucinating. According to Portland International's website, the last scheduled departure for today is 8:50 (delayed to 9:25). I have no idea if that's consistent with what was typical in 1971 (if anything, I would guess there are more flights coming in and out today than there were 50 years ago.) Anyone have any idea what time the last departure may have been?

Just trying to see if Cooper could have even had enough time to complete all the steps in the escape story and still catch a flight out of town that same night. (Never mind the insanity of returning to the scene of the crime just hours after he committed it, where FBI agents and law enforcement would have that place on alert and eye witnesses may still be around. Seems like a logical move).

New Suspect: Walter Reca

I have just received an email from Doug Perry at the Oregonian's OregonLive website which included a press release from a organization called, Principia Media. They, in turn, announced that they will have a press conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan tomorrow, May 17, to reveal the true identity of DB Cooper. I just spoke with Julie Hurley, the media contact person at Principia Media, and she said the press conference will be live-streamed on Facebook.

Principia Media has published a book from a man named Carl Laurin that describes his relationship to the individual known as DB Cooper. At the press conference Laurin will present tape recordings from Cooper and other Norjak evidence attesting to his claims. I have asked Ms. Hurley for an interview with Mr. Laurin, and I will be sharing a full report of that conversation in the near future. Principia Media will also be allowing me to examine some of the files that Laurin has established on his suspect.

Perry states in his recent OregonLive column that Laurin is a former airline pilot and fingers a deceased Army veteran, Walter Reca, as DB Cooper. Perry's article can be read at: You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

Below is the press release from Principia Media:

**********************************************************

Carl Laurin, DB Cooper and Me, A Criminal, A Spy, and My Best Friend, announcement, 5. 16. 18

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 16, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- After a 20-year investigation, the believed identity of D.B. Cooper will be revealed in a press conference May 17th. D.B. Cooper is the infamous skyjacker who boarded a Boeing 727 in Portland that was heading to Sea-Tac in Seattle, Washington, on Thanksgiving Eve, 1971. He demanded a $200,000 ransom before jumping out of the plane at 10,000 feet. Evidence, including almost-daily discussions over a 14-year period and 3+ hours of audio recordings featuring the skyjacker, was compiled by Cooper's best friend. It was then analyzed by a Certified Fraud Examiner and forensic linguist. The audio recordings, created in 2008, include Cooper discussing skyjacking details that were not known to the public prior to the FBI's information release in 2015.

- Documentation concerning how the $200,000 ransom was spent
- Confessions from Cooper to two individuals at two different times

The investigation was spearheaded by Principia Media, a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based publishing company, after being approached with overwhelming evidence. Cooper & Me: A Criminal, A Spy, My Best Friend, telling the story of his friendship with the real D.B. Cooper.

The skyjacking was only the beginning for Cooper, as he later went on to become a high-level covert intelligence operative.

Carl Laurin will be in Grand Rapids and participating in a D.B. Cooper & Me: A Criminal, A Spy, My Best Friend book signing on Thursday, May 17, at 5:30PM at Schuler Books, 2660 28th Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49512. Ten bucks says we get a story about the money being a plant, and either nothing about the tie particles or a flippant dismissal of that evidence.

Well, legit or not, a new suspect is always exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing what this "new evidence" is all about.

There's a Walter Reca from Michigan who died in 2014 at age 80. The obituary doesn't really give anything else but there is a mention of him being in the 82nd Airborne.

My "sketchy" comment was in reference to Darrell Bob Houston

"That wildness was regularly on display in bars, where Darrell Bob spent more time than Norm Peterson. He'd get his fellow beer guzzlers laughing at his exuberant stories or, when syllables became too difficult to manage, he'd overturn the jukebox or doff his clothes and run into the street. "

There's a photo here but it doesn't specify which one is supposedly Cooper and which is the author. My assumption would be Cooper is on the left but the photo from the other page on the site suggests Cooper might actually be the one on the right.

By the way, they probably should have finished the website before launching the book and holding a press conference haha. C'mon.
