It sounds like the sheriff misinterpreted the facts. bundled, reddish, red insulation, some sort of tape etc. very easy to to get things wrong. just like stating the plane was flying at 7000 feet. it's true but was at the beginning of the flight and not for a long period. he would be looking for a parachute, or a body vs a plane at 7000' or red dynamite. the witness accounts are what you go by when trying to get answers...

The case may never be 100% solved, but it would be nice to have a couple of decent suspects to point to. I guess the problem is we keep finding a lot of suspects.

How many suspects

Have a brother named dan who lived in Portland

And maybe knew a smokejumper named Fred cooper

And were in Thailand and Vientiane in Laos

And were with USAID

Which a lot of people say is really the CIA

And were in Vientiane in Laos

And whose group had offices in air america

And flew on a number of air america aircraft

And had access to the three main us bases in northeast Thailand

And have the same sunglasses

And have a connection to a tie clip that looks very similar

And have a tie that looks the same

And smoked cigarettes

And possibly drank bourbon

and returned to the united states in 1971

And have a connection to the central valley in California

And maybe liked visiting Vancouver a long time

And were smokejumpers

And have a connection to black loafers

And have a picture of them with a chain wrapped around their leg

And have a turkey neck

And might have been in the us air force

And look like the initial sketch

And somewhat like the 1972 sketch

And maybe liked drinking 7-up

And might have been in their mid 40s in 1971

Joe lord did not live or work in the pacific northwest at the time of the hijacking

He lived in Fresno

Maybe he needed money

He had just returned to the united states

Some people say he could have been 35

Tina mucklow only saw him standing for a brief time

She said he had a medium complexion

That sounds very vague

Some people say he had wavy hair

I think it is highly unlikely you will find a better suspect and or suspects than Joseph Milton and or Daniel David lord

In the smokejumpers magazine

One of the secret agents used their real first name in their alias

Maybe Joe told his family he was going to Portland to visit his brother

All,

Anyone else see this, or am I late to the news. Came out early this morning. Colbert states: ""This letter proves to me that there's been a cover-up and continues to be a cover-up on this case."

Investigators: D.B. Cooper letter confirms suspect, FBI cover-up
A fifth Cooper letter obtained through FOIA, allegedly from the real hijacker, team says, FBI not interested in revisiting case

Yes. I noticed that a lot in my research. None of the letters sent to anyone mentions "Dan Cooper." I think the Feds figured that out long ago.

In my opinion it doesn't give any credibility to these letters using a double alias...not one letter states "Dan Cooper"

Thanks, David V, for alerting us to this news tidbit. Always good to keep abreast of Cooper developments.

So, Tom Colbert has received 3,000 FOIA docs, with another 78,000 to come? Yikes. My eyeballs were spinning after reading 200.

BTW: Snowmman found this letter several years ago when we were last visiting the Letters. Most of us then, and now, believe it is bogus, as are the rest of the letters including the so-called Core-Four.

BTW II: Apparently Tom Colbert was surprised to find this letter ("I knew I wouldn't be caught") and its widespread distribution - LA Times, NY Times, Seattle Times, and the WA Post. I guess he didn't read my book, either, where this letter was discussed in detail.

More important than the letters, imho, is the character named Al Di, who popularized them. With 40 feds working with him I would have hoped TC might have been able to shed some light on Mr. Di.

I've always thought that the Al Di angle was an investigatory piece that has been overlooked. Who is this guy, and what's his story? Is he a fed? Curtis Eng? Somebody who knows DB Cooper? But with all the attention on the Flight Path, money find, parachutes, death of Earl Cossey, etc., old Al gets lost in the shuffle.

I was there -- Lewis was a nice guy, very cordial.  I enjoyed our conversation.  Caught his radio program too.  Interesting guy.  Meyer

Gene Bland:  "You know what you know, and what you don't know you just don't know.
I was brought into the investigation the day after it happened by the FBI in Carson City NV. I inspected the parachutes he left in the B-727. I talked with Causey in their office on the phone to the Bureau office in Portland about the chutes that he jumped with. We reviewed the routes.
I helped them purge the files at USPA Hq in Monterey while I worked there in the summer of '72.
From the FBI profile and the short list compiled we went through the possible suspects.
I jumpmastered on of them on his first FF and later made his first hook up. He was a USAF Survival Instructor at Stead AFB. He met the physical profile. He bought some property on an airport in KS.
Some of the jumpers that knew him there agreed.
We've discussed this several times before on Oldschool Skydiving.
I also participated in the investigation of two more skyjacking cases where we had convictions."

Let me point out that the FBI in Portland still had not been able to get in contact with Cossey in the very early morning hours of November 26th (which was the day after Thanksgiving).

Is the the fellow you quote willing to describe the backpack parachute that was still on the airliner in Reno?  Also, is he willing to discuss the flight path that he says he discussed with the agents in Reno?

He doesn't sound like law enforcement. if he "interviewed" "Causey" he should of had plenty of documents with the correct name of Cossey?

Ok, I see he was with the  USPA .....

I learned to jump at astriod parachute center in Asboro NC. This was run by Mike Bland, HALO instructor #38! I'd love to know what happened to Mike. last I heard was he married, moved to Texas, and went to work for the FAA.

Would the "Mike", you speak of, be also called "Gene" Bland"?
