Eric, good video and ideas. May I suggest some more possibilities in addition to the road salt and sand that those of us who have lived in such places as Ohio have encountered.
If Tom Kaye can pin down the type of salt that is used on roads and in such things as household water softeners, then that would be a great help. In the 1970 era, sand was used in cleaning spark plugs and sand blasting operations, plus probably other things that I have never heard of.
In my opinion, Cooper's knowledge of both the 727 and parachuting was rather limited. Most of his information could be obtained from reading aviation literature. Perhaps he was an aviation mechanic, an aviation buff, or something else along that line.
