I don't know much about the case or the codes so can you explain what the FBI doesn't know?

The F.B.I., which employs a team of code-crackers in its Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit, said it had verified Mr. Oranchak’s claim of having broken the code, known as the 340 cipher. The agency said the cipher was one of four attributed to the killer, and was first submitted to an F.B.I. lab on Nov. 13, 1969.

The bureau said it had received the solution on Dec. 5 from a cryptologic researcher.

“Over the past 51 years, C.R.R.U. has reviewed numerous proposed solutions from the public — none of which had merit,” the F.B.I. said in a statement. “The cipher was recently solved by a team of three private citizens.”

The F.B.I.’s San Francisco field office also released a statement on the breakthrough, which was reported by The San Francisco Chronicle on Friday. The statement said the field office was aware that a cipher attributed to the Zodiac Killer “was recently solved by private citizens.”

The FBI confirms again...USAToday

The cipher is one of many sent by a killer who referred to himself as Zodiac in letters sent to detectives and the media. The Zodiac terrorized Northern California communities and killed five people in the Bay Area in 1968 and 1969.

According to code-breaking expert David Oranchak, the cipher's text includes: "I hope you are having lots of fun in trying to catch me. ... I am not afraid of the gas chamber because it will send me to paradise all the sooner because I now have enough slaves to work for me," the newspaper reported.

Oranchak, who has been working on the Zodiac's codes for years, said in an email to the newspaper that the solved cipher was sent to the FBI.
"They have confirmed the solution. No joke! This is the real deal," he wrote. Cameron Polan, spokeswoman for the FBI's San Francisco office, confirmed Oranchak's claim Friday.
Clearly, the FBI and many other dozen cryptologists are wrong, and R99 is right. None of us know what we are are talking about re: Zodiac and or the code. Honestly, I’m not sure the point of posting here or on Zodiac sites since R99 has it all figured out.

Chaucer, I have clearly stated that no one, and that includes you, me, the FBI, and everyone else, does not have it figured out.  In your case, you haven't even been able to figure out what constitutes the code.  To repeat, no one has broken any of the Zodiac ciphers to date regardless of claims to the contrary.
Robert,
I'm honestly not sure if you are being serious, or if you are just trolling to piss me off. Seriously, I'm not sure.

Suggesting that the orginal 408 cipher of the Zodiac was not solved is akin to suggesting that Cooper money was not found on Tena Bar. It is simply a fact. You can deny it all you want, but it is fact. It was solved by Donald Harden and his wife, and was independently verified by the FBI. Meanwhile, in the 50+ years since it was solved, the solution as been verified multipled times by independent sources. Again, your denial of this solution is perplexing and factually WRONG.

Meanwhile, Dave Oranchack's solution has also been confirmed as verified by the FBI and since then, many others. To suggest others is simply wrong.

I have attached an FBI file that clearlystates that the 408 was solved and independently verified by the FBI.

Again, your denial of facts is concerning. I have researched the Zodiac case for 15 years. I am on a first name basis with the folks who solved the code.  I don't understand your gaslighting this well known fact of the case.
“Completely unhinged”

Robert, I don't know what will get you to admit that the 408 and the 340 have been solved. The FBI has confirmed the solutions. The 408 was solved by the Hardens, then the 340 by this group. Please what more do you want to see or hear. I wish that they would have given us the name of the killer.

Bickering aside.  The pageviews on Wikipedia for Zodiac are off the charts.  This may not move the case forward, but it certainly gives it a lot of publicity.  Same for Cooper this week. The pageviews are ten times the average due to Marvel's little trailer showing Loki as DB Cooper.  At least Loki is a better candidate than Tommy Wiseau.

You are absolutely right about the publicity.  Some people have made careers on the Cooper matter claiming that their candidate was Cooper.  One lady claimed that her uncle was Cooper and she was interviewed on network television and elsewhere and reportedly prepared a 400 page book, which apparently has not been published, on the subject.  This included the FBI doing some DNA tests as I understand it.  But there is no way in hell that her candidate could have been Cooper.

So any claims by anyone on the Zodiac matter or the Cooper hijacking are sure to get a lot of media coverage even if they are totally preposterous.  And the same goes for the Amelia Earhart matter.

In addition to my previous comments on the Zodiac code solutions, I'll add that both of the proposed solutions are trivial in the extreme.  Why would anyone encode such silly messages?  In my always humble opinion, they don't even pass the smell test.

The criminal mind is always puzzling. some write letters to taunt and some even write them to get caught. serial killers can be very intelligent. zodiac could of used his method for distraction only, which appears to have worked. the message doesn't HAVE to lead to anything or incriminate. the fact of no evidence in the codes is hardly grounds for dismissal..the three involved in the codes also admit it doesn't forward the case. perhaps, it's exactly what Zodiac planned from the beginning. lots of people were trying to crack the code hoping to catch him that way while he was killing.

The zodiac case has had others trying to crack the codes. the FBI has already admitted they "had no merit" however, this doesn't appear to be the case this time around. it's not just agents stating it's been cracked.

There are a few more ciphers that are not solved. Both don't have many symbols in them. One is said to contain the killer's name. Without having many symbols they will be harder to solve. I wonder if people are going to use a key from the solved ciphers to start working on the others. My guess is that he wasn't a known suspect.

In deciphering codes, it is a always a good idea to determine what constitutes the code before you proceed with the deciphering.  Things just work better that way.  And that has not happened with either the Z408 or Z340 codes.
