In addition Tom says: My cold case team and the investigation itself are being deactivated, for three reasons:

1. FBI cutbacks, lack of communication, and items sent in for testing still not tested.
2. No progress with the typed "DB Cooper" letter. Apparent lack of FBI interest.
3. Decision to redirect personal interests and pursuits.

"But I won't completely vanish -- I look forward to joining the Forum in the near future.

Thanks for the kind words Tom.....it means a lot!

You sure the hell can't say you didn't give it your best shot. you had a very impressive team of people..the information you released is priceless and a valuable asset to the Cooper community. I'm just some southern boy who opened a discussion forum surrounding DB Cooper. you on the other hand opened up a whole new world to explore in this crazy unsolved mystery decades old.

Colbert's leaving the game? He just had a successful media blitz! I got deluged by folks wanting to know about Tom and Letter #5!

At the least, will he tell us how his crypto guy decoded 717171634 into 371st Radio Research Unit AND 11th General Support Group? (Okay, 371st Radio Group comes from three 71s. eg: 71-71-71, but the 11th GSG, now, that's tricky.)

Leaving Coop because the FBI doesn't want to play with him? It begs the question of why his 40 CCT ex-feds can't exert better influence on their former colleagues.

Below you will find chapter 1. If you do have comments, please direct them to me via a message . I do not wish to clutter the thread.

Few things to keep in mind:
1. The attempt here is a narrative, historical account in the vein of Cornelius Ryan and Barbara Tuchman. Thus, I assume the reader will know little or nothing about the event. I want the reader to feel they are there.
2. I base everything on primary sources and facts I have discovered and researched, hence the extensive footnotes and bibliography. There are many "facts" out there derived from secondary sources for which I can find no collaborating evidence. 
3. That said, the bibliography is still a work in progress and will need revision in the future (Like my pizza, I prefer the Chicago Style).
4. Where facts from various sources contradict each other, I make my best attempt to convey to the reader what happened.
5. I make no pretense to be an aficionado or expert. In the words of Carl Sagan: “There is much about which even experts are ignorant; this will probably always be the case.�
6. This is a work in progress.

Welcome to the Forum, too. Glad you're here. I especially enjoyed your global perspective on the skyjacking, putting it into the context of the times. I also learned a few things: I didn't know that Larry Finegold had been interviewed by the WSHM. I'll have to check that out.

Thanks to all those commenting on my writing.
One thing brought to my attention: apparently when I converted my manuscript to upload here, all the end notes got converted into footnotes. This was not my intention. They are actually end notes, so things may look a bit goofy.

New Sleuth to the DB Cooper case

A fellow by the name of Terry Battcher has joined Cooper World, although he may be on loan from the Zodiac Killer investigation and the Jon Ramsey Benet murder. Terry is an engineer with a keen mind. He sees connections between Zodi, Danny, and Ms. Benet. He is looking globally at all of them.

I had an extensive chat with him last night and resisted the inclination to call him a whack-a-doodle, and I am glad that I did. I don't think he has any direct input for us on DBC, but he sees a connection between the letters that are associated with all three crimes.

As I understand Terry, the Core Four letters - or Core Six as he has come to prefer - even if they are not written by the Norjak hijacker they may have been written by the person, or persons, involved in the other crimes. This gives a new meaning to conspiracy theory. It is as fascinating as it is mind-numbing. Imagine a Bob Knoss who is rationale and listens.

Terry is currently posting at the Mountain News in the commentary section of the most recent DBC posting, the one titled: "Flap over Letters Attracts Nationwide Attention."

Latest Cooper Documentary

Got an email yesterday from a film docu guy in Toronto, named Alexander McIntosh, who is researching the personal stories of guys who hijack airplanes. Obviously he is very interested in Robb Heady.

I'll be talking with him shortly and getting more information. I hope he can locate and interview Richard LaPlant, Martin McNally, and some of the other skyjackers. A few should be accessible from prison or their psych facility. Could be an interesting addition to the Cooper Firmament.

Within the past few months, there was a new cable program about this attempted escape.  It was a very scientifically oriented program and discussed, among other things, the bottom geography of San Francisco Bay between Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge.  I believe they also did some drift tests that supported their studies.

The prisoners entered the water at Alcatraz just minutes after the night tide had started moving out to the Pacific.  When they were just east of the Golden Gate Bridge, they would have encountered a "whirlpool" type area, caused by the bottom of the bay geography, that could have sent then on out into the Pacific and sent lighter items such as the paddles and life preserver, back to Angel Island.

To make a long story short, there is no rational reason for believing that either of the three prisoners survived.

Nevertheless, the US Marshalls say that they will keep the case open until the youngest prisoner's 99th birthday.

Would the US Marshalls please join us here on this thread to look for Cooper?  Please!

I saw that program also - listened to the current explanations. These guys were probably unprepared for what they encountered.  Thats one reason they built Alcatraz where it was.
