The post was made by Bruce on another thread. it's been moved to this thread....the TV Guys made there thread. we need to respect that. they are only interested in people commenting to them. I think we should leave other media avenues off of TV guys thread...

Media Update

Another media company has joined the fray - LMNO. I spoke with a Ted Skillman today, who said that his outfit is in production on a "four-hour retrospective on Norjak." He is making the rounds gathering information, perspectives, etc. He said that his eyes are already glazing over regarding the parachute controversy; heh, heh.  Welcome to Cooper World, Teddy!

I also got an email from Andrew Jacobs, the original TV Guy at Atlas Media, who wrote that Jo has been busting his chops!

I guess we all get busy at times. I'm working on another business at the moment. I'm looking into using a drone for taking aerial photo's of jobsites. these guys pay a lot of money to photographers, and renting a helicopter. I'm working with one of the main contractor's I work for. we have all the connections, and friendship with tons of large and small companies.

The Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon Quadcopter is simply amazing. GPS on board. it will follow you, land by itself etc. it has a camera on the receiver so you can see what the copter see's. the camera records in 1080 HD. this unit runs about $1200.

Shutter, I think you are tapping into a new and very fast growing field.  If you are going to be operating in relatively close proximity to people, I would suggest that you consider a drone that uses ducted propellers because of the safety factor.  Otherwise, some people might just walk into those propellers.  I have seen people walk into airplane propellers and the end result was not pleasant.

And you might make inquiries of your local bureaucrats about the rules and regulations involving drones.  They probably don't have any rules specific to drones.  So if they get irritated with you, they might try to use rules that have nothing to do with drones.  I think that the FAA does have some general rules that apply to drones.

The drone in the video was apparently quiet and didn't seem to bother the birds at all.  I presume that drone was electrically powered from batteries.

And the views from the drone were excellent and much more informative than anything that could be done at ground level.

Yes, you have valid points, and I've already looked into them. the FAA had already ruled out Commercial use of drones, but have since turned this rule over. I'm looking into mainly doing large jobs after construction hours, which usually is after 3:00 - 3:30.

Apparently these drones have already caused accidents with low flying aircraft. a majority of projects will call for flight levels under 100 feet well below any aviation traffic. If I'm on a jobsite during work hours the project manager will be notified when I arrive. I will tell him that I need a perimeter set up for safety. the drone will go straight up, and not be flying low enough to put anyone in danger of the drone itself. I don't have to fly up close to the project. it will be set back for wide angle views.

The drone is electric. it will fly up to 30 minutes I believe. it will also hold it's position in wind. it alerts when the battery is low, and if it can't get back in time it will land on it's own vs dropping out of the sky. in the GPS mode it will not move until you make a move. you can set the transmitter down and watch it hover. if you get far enough away not felling comfortable about the distance, you flip a switch, and it will return and land. this model is the Yuneec Q500+ Typhoon.

This one in the video is the older model.the new one is the 500+

Pretty amazing.  I can't believe the technology you can get for $1200.  We have a Syma X5C drone with a video camera and lights.  I picked it up for $60 on Amazon.  It's a toy with less than 5 minutes fly time, no gps, no auto-return, weak camera, but it is a blast!  Keep us posted.

They are fun! I started out with a E-Flight helicopter years ago. then moved up to the single blade copter. this unit seems to be the best bang for the buck, and for "newbies". they have a professional model, the Yuneec H920 Tornado. this puppy will set you back $4700. I'm not even going to attempt thinking about that one as of yet.

This guy went up to 1450 feet with the Q500. the airspace was cleared....my average altitude will be under 100 feet.

Drones may, or may not, have been used in that recent search.  However, helicopters with specific capabilities, such as infrared technology, have long been used by local and state law enforcement agencies.  A number of them were reportedly used in this search.  And there were some recent media claims that the FBI has a fleet of general aviation type aircraft that have some enhanced surveillance capabilities and that they fly high enough so that they are not generally noticed by the objects of the surveillance.

The extremely dense woods and heavy rains worked against technology in the recent matter.

In order to become legitimate with a business that uses drones you have to go through the FAA. at this moment it's illegal to use drones for commercial use. they are actually going after people posting video's on You Tube showing drones. they claim money is being made by showing these video's falling into commercial use.

Drones are being used in Real Estate, and they have already shut some down. what is confusing is what height is really considered FAA regulated airspace? if you fly 40 feet up in the air to take video of a house how can the FAA stop you, or 5 feet off the ground?

Others jumping on board are law enforcement, fire departments, City inspections, engineering companies. Amazon is trying to start a delivery system. I don't see this happening in the near future. this would open the door to dozens of companies flying unattended flight paths all over the place. that's a little different from others flying in the general area with line of sight.

As of March 23, 2015, the FAA will automatically grant a "blanket" COA for flights at or below 200 feet to any UAS operator with a Section 333 exemption, provided the aircraft weighs less than 55 pounds, but getting the exemption seems to be the problem. hundreds have filed but only a handful have been granted. it's turned into a cluster F**k of red tape, and grey area's.

At one point they were requiring a pilots licence. that's a little extreme. which would they require, helicopter, or fixed wing, Cessna, or Commercial airlines? would four electric motors fall under multi-engine aircraft?

Ok, after a lot of research I have figured out what needs to be done to fly a drone commercially. a 333 exemption must be filed and approved by the FAA, no exceptions. this process takes up to 120 for approval/denial. then you must register the drone with a N-number. N467US is currently "Deregestered"

They have a rather lengthy list of guidelines to follow once approved. here are a few guidelines.

1) Stay below 200 feet.
2) Stay 5 nautical miles from airports.
3) Stay in line of sight.

I received a response from one of our largest contractors (Stiles) they are interested, but warned of the FAA regulations. I'm currently working on the exemption.
