How did the FBI conduct their Norjak investigation? - Who made the decisions?
Excellent post Georger. The issues you raise are critical. Here is what I know.
1. Larry Carr took essentially a passive approach to his investigation, despite being active on the DZ and releasing info on the tie, money, organizing the CS, etc. He succinctly stated in the History Channel that he treated Norjak as a bank heist in the sky, and responded as he did in other bank robberies - release all the information that he had on the crime and "let the public bring the suspect in to us" or words to that effect.
2. Charlie Farrell's perspective is unknown, but not unknowable. He wrote a 300-page treatise on his work, but not only was it never published publicly, he and his family have refused to share it with anyone I know other than Geoffrey Gray, whose access to FBI information is one of the mysteries of Norjak. I asked SA Bob Sale to make an intervention with the Farrell family on my behalf, but to no avail. Georger, perhaps you could review it and give us an overview? The Farrells live in Seattle and Charlie only passed away a few years ago. Sailshaw has access to the guys who know the Farrells, like Bob Sale, via the SYC.
3. SA John Detlor was part of the key investigatory team under Farrell and is still alive. John is a nice guy, often chatty on the phone or in emails and has appeared in every docu on Cooper that I know of. However, he has totally clammed-up since the HC docu. Perhaps you could talk with him, Georger? He clearly does not trust me, nor has anyone approached him with the kinds of questions that you have raised here.
4. Ron Nichols was the case agent after Farrell and was in charge when the money was found. Nichols lives in Seattle during the warm months and Palm Desert, CA in the cooler months. He is there now. He has steadfastly refused all contact with me, either in Seattle or California. As far as I know, he has refused contact with GG and Galen as well. Rumor has it that he is old school and can't stand showboating agents like Himmelsbach. Again, I suggest that you contact him Georger and ask for a sit-down. I have all of his contact information, except email.
5. Curtis Eng is an enigma. We saw how he thought very clearly in the HC docu. But he has never fully explained the Marla stuff, nor Al Di. But he was active with Tom Kaye and GG, certainly allowing them access initiated by Larry Carr. But Curtis did allow the case to be closed. I sense that the decision to do so came from above, but nevertheless, Curtis didn't have a game plan for solving the case that I could see, and certainly not one that impressed his superiors to hold off on closing shop. Curtis has rebuffed all of my efforts to discuss Norjak, but once again, perhaps you have the magic touch.
