we had a projection room for a large TV screen. we removed it, and installed a kitchen $$$$ it stayed open for about 6 months and then the cooks were removed, and we made the food for the customers. basically, it didn't work.

Dockside commercial fishing dive bars have to be among the toughest. I started commercial fishing at age 11 as a lowly deckhand and worked up to skippering a 42 foot boat at age 17. Fortunately I couldn't go into most bars until I was 21. One bar in Eureka CA was so tough that there were frequently bloodstains on the paved area in front of the entrance where drunk angry fishermen "took it outside". If fishing was good the violence was minimal but if it was bad, the financial pressures and tempers rose fast. Add alcohol and kaboom.

Just to note*  if you were under-aged you could still go into some of these bars, if you were a part of "the band".   :)
Other categories could be advantaged legally.

Update on the Ariel Store Rebuild

I have just received an email from Bryan Woodruff. Here are the highlights:

1. He refuses to talk with me about the rebuild, or to participate in any interview for a Mountain News-WA story about the rebuild.
2. He is the sole owner of the Ariel Store, apparently consolidating/resolving issues with his family in February 2016.
3. He has turned over total control of the finances and marketing of the Ariel Store rebuild - including media outreach - to Robert Blevins.
4. Bryan has amplified his hostility towards me.
5. Bryan intimated that I will not be allowed on the premises during the rebuild of the Ariel Store, nor after completion.
6. On a subjective level, the language and tone of Bryan's emails to me are indistinguishable from Robert Blevins'.
7. On a related issue, Bryan and I have not spoken since his mother's death - when he was quite accessible, chatty, and amiable. Currently, his behavior is decidedly different - he does not return phone calls, nor does his phone have a message machine.

Sure looks like "an end of an era" to me.

The whole thing is very sad. you should do a write up on the Mountain news about the banning for reasons unknown. Mr. Blevins knows all to well about banning. he's been banned from this site for his behavior since it first started.

It's really a shame Bryan has decided on this direction.

We had a bar just outside of Port Everglades in Fort lauderdale. the "Anchor Inn" been there since the 50's. it was very similar to what you are talking about. my dad told me he use to go in there when he was younger. unfortunately, the bar was torn down in favor of a car lot? this was in the late 90's I believe.

Added..the name was "Freddies Anchor Inn' been there for 60 years, and closed down in 2001.

Opened in 1939, and in 1948 Freddie purchased the bar. he died in 1998 of a heart attack behind the bar..

It really is sad.  Ariel is a very small area.  The best opportunity to raise money for a rebuild was to tap into the Cooper community.   I don't see any benefit in alienating that group.

My view on Ariel and Bryan is kind of like: "Don't Cry for Me Argentina...."

The need within the DB Cooper community for a museum and space for symposia is very real, and has been discussed by many for a long time. If not in Ariel, it will be somewhere else. Doug Kenk-Crispin is the curator of the Oregon Historical Society in Portland and is a kick-ass Cooper fan. The WSHM clearly has strong DB Cooper chops. Locally in Pierce County, WA, Thun Field is a hot-spot for Cooper activities.

Maybe when I'm selling 500 books a month I'll shift gears and turn into an impresario for producing the Biggest and Best Boogie Night for Danny imaginable. After all, with that moolah I'll be able to start courtin' all those Cooper babes...

...moonlight cruises down the Lewis River...wine...candles...violins...and hot dogs at Tina Bar! For sure, Ms. Mucklow will be unable to resist me...

Stay tuned. I feel good things a'comin'.

Georger  you say "Just to note*  if you were under-aged you could still go into some of these bars, if you were a part of "the band". Other categories could be advantaged legally"

I say:  "When I was just 15 yrs old I played the bag pipe in the Berkeley Canadian Legion Bag Pipe Band in which my brother Ned was Pipe Major and when ever we finished playing in a parade in San Francisco we would gather at a Scottish Bar in San Francisco (it was the gathering place for the foot ball rugby team and the jute box had all bag pipe tunes on it). I think it was at 555 Turk st in San Francisco. Anyway, people would buy our band a round when we played live in the tavern (and I was just 15). Our big drummer was also the big drummer at Cal Berkeley and could twirl the big drum while playing it
377 might have known of this Tavern as it was a fun place to relax after a parade.
Yes Georger you are right, these things did happen in the good old days.

Thank you!

Cardinal Rule of the Universe!  Everything RMB gets involved with turns to shit - without exception. Advice: bide your time. Byran will probably be backing out - running for help - needing an attorney - facing Cowlitz County Commissioners and/or Planning & Zoning Board who want to turn his property into a hole in the ground and block everything he or Blevins dreams up - wishing he could jump off the Tacoma Bridge - may lose his property to Blevins - may have bungled and now has a "contract" with Blevins! - the list of disaster options are long.

Blevins will alienate everybody. That you can count on. Bryan could be in deep doo-dah.

Does anyone think this relationship Bryan has got himself into will last?

Bide your time. It's beyond anyone's control now. Maybe Lyle Christiansen in Minnesota now owns the property through Blevins? Anything you can image is possible.

It's my understanding Bobby is already wanting to cut corners...including getting around codes! huge mistake in commercial work, but what do I know I've only been doing it for over 20 years...

This is exactly what Boards of Supervisors, County Commissioners, Planning & Zoning People, and County Attorneys just love - some guy who knows more about codes and enforcement than they do! Maybe they will grandfather the place in as a Historical Monument? Unless its built on an Indian Cemetery?  8)

Maybe they will find Cooper's shoes and the Arc of the Covenant! ?

Sounds like the public needs to be made aware of the decisions taking place in Ariel with the banning of hardcore DB Cooper researchers, and some media outlets. The Mountain News has been around long enough to be considered hardcore Cooper site.

Some may not always agree with the articles, but it's still an active place to catch up on the Cooper world activities.

When asking for money from the public, the last thing you need floating around is refusing to do interviews with the Cooper community. then the constant blocking of the forum to the public. actually, it should be considered a website since 98% of the members there end up leaving due to "inward thinking" and zero interaction taking place other than the administrator.

This is not a case of joining under a false name simply to stir shit up. this is a real life issue that needs to be taken seriously. criticism is part of the process. questions will be asked, specially when the background of the project is needed. people want to know who is involved, and why before they dish any money out.

My decision to not get involved was not an easy one. as mentioned before. I don't personally know Bryan, but I respect his choice to continue his mother's tradition, and I wish him the best of luck, but I refuse to get involved with someone who has been bashing this site since the first day it appeared online. his site is filled with spiteful, hatred, and jealous comments from him, and his moderator.
