Good luck to Dona's son in reopening the Ariel Tavern and I applaud Bryan in wanting to preserve his mother's memory.

But, the "DB Cooper Party"  was the event.  Ariel Tavern is a rundown old building that wouldn't be anything but a teardown other than that event.  Dona didn't start DB Cooper days .  The former owners used the book "Ha Ha Ha" to advertise the event (and their having so many copies of that book led me to believe they published it).  The building is not part of the hijacking story -- DB Cooper didn't hide there or bury money there as far as we know.  It's just a building.

More power to Bryan.  I don't see any reason to contribute, though.

Thanks Mark. it seems to be the starting of a trend with the actual value the tavern has/had.

I brought this up when Bruce first reported her death. I thought it would be nice to start helping out, but it appears not everyone has the same view. it's sounding like "the end of a era" you are the third person with the same view.

I think it's more of the location being an issue more than anything else. after reading the "attitude" of the project. my second impression is not good. I don't know Bryan, but he's giving me bad vibs. why in the world would someone add law suits to a helping cause? I'm a little set back and confused about the whole thing. I'll bet Robert has planted plenty of false information to Bryan.

I would like to hear everyone's view about the Aerial Tavern. is it worth saving, putting thousands into it bringing it up to code, or is it an end of a era?

This seems like the perfect project to stay clear from.  I'm sensing quite a bit of negativity in Bryan's email to Bruce and I'm not seeing much of an upside for anybody getting involved.  Just my $.02

I agree, I can only guess that Robert has skewed his thoughts? why would someone be like that while asking for help?

Back in the late 80/early 90's I worked in a bar. this bar was old, and changed hands 6-7 times. when it closed a lot of people were lost on where to go. thoughts of getting the bar back up and running was thought about by me, and a few others, but it soon became a distant memory. I miss the bar, and people to this very day, but sometimes things are better off left alone.

I understand what Bryan is trying to accomplish, and I wish him all the luck. I'm sure his mother would be proud of what he's trying to accomplish.

I agree with your and MarkBennett's thoughts. It's really a Washington, regional, and family affair if they want to preserve the bar.

I didn't know Donna lived there until Bruce told me. it was basically a house turned into a bar. that's why they ran into so many issue's with the city once she passed. depending on what they intend on doing, the city can bankrupt them in a hurry.

Signed and sealed Engineering drawings $$$
Permit cost$$
Beer & wine license$$
Restaurant license (serving alcohol)
Restaurant, commercial equipment$$
Up to date land survey$$
Lots to consider before any work is done...

Well, Ariel is not much of a town.   It's an unincorporated part of Cowlitz County.

The house was built on the side of a hill.  The top floor is the bar, and it's the level you enter from the street.  The house is below.  It's a "dive" bar, but there are a lot of "dive" bars and a lot of people like them.

I don't know what memorabilia they have there.  There are some newspaper articles.  Some books.  There is a parachute hanging on the ceiling.  Souvenir t-shirts.  But actual artifacts from the crime?  I don't know that there is any.

I agree with Shutter.  That email sure sounds like Robert Blevins talked Bryan's ear off about what bad people other DB Cooper fans are.  The one comment that really sticks with me as odd was the part where Bryan says Robert  stayed in touch.  "DID YOU?"  I don't know what to make of that.  Shutter lost his dad a couple of years ago and we expressed our sympathy and appreciate hearing what he's done as a memorial to him.  But, it sounds like Bryan was expecting more than that and is disappointed that more wasn't done from the DB Cooper community.  I don't know what he means.

Oh, well.  To each their own, I guess.

My State used to have roadside bars, inns, eating places, etc all over the place. Many of them with living quarters for the owners. It was a living but these places never were money makers. Less than 1% of them survive today, mainly due to changing building codes nobody could afford to keep up with. These were places you could escape to and have a private family meal (no matter how famous, infamous, or normal you were). Nice gathering places out in the country ... a whole way of life ended with the closing of these places. Tempus fugates! I miss the hell out of these places... I know what Dona's family is going through. It's not an easy transition ...

Mark, I think its a Washington and Cowlitz county affair.

Maybe Adventure Books International LTD of Seattle, Toronto, Zurich, and Tokyo should buy the old Christiansen homestead and turn it into a bar and the home of the one-and-only home of D.B. Cooper !  8) 8) 8) Blevins and Gayla can live in the attic and the Ariel crowd can gather there! ???

Dive bars are fun to me. always an interesting crowd, and a fight or two usually happens every nite  ;D I lost count on how many I threw out of our little dive. also lost count on the threats. never the less, they were still fun to pull a stool up too.

" a bunch of fools, on a row of stools"  8)

Mark, I don't fully understand his reasoning either with the staying in touch. sadly, the world continues to revolve after you leave this little round rock.

I have never seen anyone from Aerial on any forum, or speaking out about the case other than the yearly festival? where are they in between? do they stay in touch?

This night should be a whooper for Blevins to take things out of context with...another apple for the teacher  ;D ;D

Bars are generally not cash cows. everyone thinks they are though. just adding a kitchen can dig a hole for ya.

My guess is Donna's family will stand for only so much. It isnt about Blevins but about Donna an the Ariel Tavern and Donna's family. Blevins was in high school picking his nose when the Ariel Tavern and Donna got famous. Once again Mr/ Blevins is out of his element. Oh well ... Donna's family doesnt need this crap.
